Summary:
Responsible and accountable for leading a team of software engineers in addition to hands on development.  Accountable and responsible for achieving operational results which meet or exceed customer expectations while improving quality and overall operational performance.  Effectively and proactively communicates with peers, management, staff and suppliers regarding vision, strategy, technical approaches, operational and cultural expectations, and operational performance.  Responsible for defining tactical execution plan for the engineering team.  Manages daily activities of subordinate team to include participating in recruiting, training, and performance/compensation management as well as motivating, delegating and monitoring results.
 
 
Essential Duties:
  • Leads development, maintenance, and unit tests for a software Computer Software Configuration Item (CSCI) by utilizing software development environments and programming languages in order to implement design and satisfy allocated requirements. Develops Computer Software Component (CSC) software requirements and algorithms. Defines external interfaces. Performs CSC requirements change assessment.  Leads code walkthroughs. Mentors less experienced team members.
  • Provides technical direction and guidance to team regarding technology, design, approved processes, tools, and skills for own projects or processes. Ensures technical approach and deliverables meet customer, company, quality, industry and regulatory requirements. Provides approval of workgroup technical approaches, products and processes. Prioritizes tasks and lead reviews. Develops corrective action plans.
  • Ensures execution of the implementation of integrated organizational plans to ensure business, technical and customer requirements are met and expected results are achieved. Provides focus on key departmental initiatives and deliverables, supports Management to define organizational structure.  Reviews tactical plan effectiveness.   Defines appropriate adjustments and escalates if appropriate, and resolves issues. Collaborates with the Manager on decisions to continue or discontinue programs, projects or processes as appropriate.  Establishes partnerships and relationships with internal and external customers, stakeholders, peers, managers, and subordinate team members to ensure results are achieved. Reviews and collaborates with the Manager on facility, equipment and service plans to maximize productivity and ensure safety, security, environmental and regulatory compliance in the area of responsibility.  Measures progress to plan. Holds subordinate team members accountable and responsible for achieving goals and results. Prepares the approval of the technical approach and processes used on program/projects.
  • Manages subordinate team members. Forecasts resource needs and makes hiring decisions in collaboration with the Manager. Coaches, counsels, mentors and provides developmental opportunities and job assignments to enhance team member performance and expand capabilities. Provides on-going developmental feedback. Makes compensation recommendations to the Manager  in regards to hiring salaries and salary review actions.  Recognizes contributions of individuals to improve employee satisfaction and retain a skilled and motivated workforce. Enforces company rules and policies regarding ethical behavior, safety, security, use of company property, time charging, etc.
  • Provides technical leadership for Management and project management including schedules, plans, and estimates. Assists project managers with risk management and progress reviews. Leads process reviews.
  • Contributes to the formulation and communication of departmental tactical and resource plan.  Supports the Management Team in developing departmental technical strategies, goals, objectives and related metrics to ensure alignment with JTS and Jeppesen vision/strategy.  Works closely with software test engineer leads on quality improvement initiatives and efforts to enable improve testability of software assets.  Manages team to meet project requirements; collaborates with the Manager on needs.  Applies solid understanding of budget management principles and practices to ensure realistic budgets are attained in the area of responsibility. 
Education/Experience:
Technical degree in a related field of study and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Experience managing or leading teams
 
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures that typically affect individual subordinate employees.  Knowledge of skills and abilities required by subordinate employees to accomplish organizational responsibilities.  Knowledge of leadership and management principles as well as hands on software engineering.
  • Ability to accomplish results mainly through supervision of subordinates.   
  • Skilled in monitoring the daily operations of a team and actively assisting or providing direction to subordinates as required.  May perform in staff or professional groups ongoing operational tasks of organization unit.
  • Ensures that projects are completed on schedule following established procedures and schedules.  Responsible for the technical approach.
  • Majority of liaison is on an internal basis.  External contacts are infrequent and involve routine matters.
  • Required skills:   Java, Angular 1.3.9 & 2.0, Javascript, Typescript, jQuery, Ant, Maven
  • Nice to have skills: Red Hat Linux, Jasmine, Karma, C#, SQL Server, D3, Sonar, Node.js
  • Agile Experience for Software Development is a plus.
